As for the Minion method, does this work Barbecue using lump coals as well?

So far I've just used where and wood chunks. The Great layer will serve as your drip pan. Would this be a necessary step Outdoors a vertical model such as mine? This is my first 'true' smoker, (not counting an old CharBroil Great Outdoors Barbecue which has served me well over the years) and I wanna do it RIGHT, from the get-go.
